About Us
The Association of Forensic Professionals of Nigeria is a collection of experts in the various fields of forensic science with common ideology geared towards addressing the dearth and optimizing the potentials of the field and practice of forensic science in Nigeria through education, research and providing a platform for obtaining the services of qualified forensic experts in the country for the overall good of the justice system.
AFPON HISTORY
A visionary group comprising ten individuals and experts in various fields of forensic science united with the shared goal of establishing an association that could bolster forensic endeavors and progress in Nigeria. The aim was to provide a platform for promoting forensic science and its institutionalization into the justice system, fostering professional growth, and raising awareness of forensic evidence's significance.
The Association of Forensic Professionals of Nigeria became official on March 15, 2012, registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. The founding and inaugural President, Mr. Churchill Torru, took the helm. Early efforts focused on publications advocating for a forensic body, emphasizing the pivotal role of forensic experts in justice delivery and briefly outlining the key forensic fields within their scope. Awareness campaigns targeting law enforcement, security, and relevant institutions commenced alongside membership drives. However, the association faced challenges in its early years. Progress was hindered due to limited freedom of association, regimented officer lifestyles, and bureaucratic financial hurdles.
The turning point arrived with strategic partnerships established, including collaborations with Fingerprint Associates in the UK and Stasoul Nigeria Ltd. This period witnessed pivotal training on Crime Scene Management, an impactful conference, and a workshop that attracted both experts and the public. This period marked a breakthrough for the Association and catapulted it into the spotlight.
A renewed commitment to membership growth and awareness campaigns set the stage for the 2021 2nd annual conference.
2022: Momentum continued with the successful hosting of the 3rd annual conference and 2nd workshop. Throughout its existence, the Association remained dedicated to its mission, conducting numerous meetings and offering free programs aimed at promoting forensic science’s role in justice delivery and facilitating learning opportunities.
Over the years the association has welcomed a diverse array of experts, researchers, and individuals from scientific and legal backgrounds. These members have joined under various membership categories.
The association’s commitment to continuous improvement is evident through ongoing training sessions and the presentation of various papers during its meetings and activities keeping members up-to-date with modern best practices. This commitment enabled some Association members to engage in research, producing local forensic materials for fingerprint development and enhancing crime scene investigation techniques.
